Sinfonia Chorale - Summer Newsletter 2024

Dear Friends

We cannot believe that it is almost summer and nearly time for our last concert of the season!

This time we will be performing pieces which explore ‘watery’ themes, such as our main item Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo. This was written by Michael Flanders and Joseph Horovitz in 1970 and was described as a ‘cantata in popular style arranged for male lead and SATB, with piano, optional bass and drums’. It is a lively, quite dramatic piece, based upon the Biblical tale of Noah found in Genesis, chapters 6-9.

Our musical selection will also include The Blue Bird by Stanford, a beautifully meditative piece, describing the path of a bird over a lake; Auf Dem See by Mendelssohn (first published in 1838, based on a text by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe); The Ballad of Semmerwater (1910) by Edgar Bainton and the celebratory Cloudburst by Eric Whitacre. This piece (text adapted from a poem by Octavio Paz) is a wonderfully intricate depiction of a stormy cloudburst. Spoken and sung sections, other instruments, dissonance, clapping and snapping all cleverly combine as the storm builds, then fades.

We are also very excited to be welcoming Oliver Brown, a talented oboe soloist, to perform at the concert. He is the principal oboe at Opera North Youth Orchestra and will be continuing his studies in September at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, having accepted a scholarship there. He will be playing Telemann’s Sonata in A Minor, Binge’s The Watermill and Mozart’s Sonata in F Major Don’t miss the opportunity to hear this superb performer!

The concert will take place at West Bridgford Methodist Church (Musters Rd, Nottingham, NG2 7PQ) on Sunday June 30th at 3.30pm. Tickets are £10 and include a tasty cream tea! We look forward to seeing you there!
