10.00 am - 5.30 pm

This year's Workshop for singers and instrumentalists was centred on Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610, the work that will feature in our next concert on 20 March at Southwell Minster.

The Vespers is the first great landmark work of the choral repertoire, and, like a later such work - J S Bach's Mass in B minor - we don' t know how, or even if, it was performed during the composer's lifetime. It is also almost an accident that this lavish and extravagant work has come to be associated with the great court of Venice at a time when its prosperity and influence were at their height. But on the title page, Monteverdi states that it is intended 'for the private chapels and chambers of princes', thus implying both stately surroundings and a grand festive occasion.

This event was fully booked, and, astonishingly and regretfully, we had to turn some people away.
