It is hard to believe that we are two-thirds of the way through this year’s programme and that this will be the last newsletter of the 2014/15 season.

The Royal Baroque concert on March 7th at Beeston Parish Church was a great success. Not only were both the singing and the instrumental playing of an exceptionally high calibre, but we also had an amazing audience with hardly any seats to spare. Thank you for your support. We are grateful to those who regularly attend our concerts but equally, it was wonderful to see so many new faces. Some had even come from the South of England!!

Next Concert

Our next concert “Midsummer Music” is at West Bridgford Methodist Church on Saturday, June 13th at 7.30pm. The programme is an eclectic mix, ranging from John Rutter’s “The Wind in the Willows” to the final chorus of Verdi’s great opera “Falstaff” with lots of interesting items in between.

To add an instrumental dimension to the programme, we are delighted that four members of the talented Kanneh-Mason family are to be our guest artists.

Bergedorfer Kammerchor

You may recall that in 2014 Sinfonia Chorale visited Germany to sing with the Bergedorfer Kammerchor. This was a most enjoyable trip and we are delighted that they are visiting us for a “Return Match”. They arrive on the 19th August and will be here until Sunday 23rd. They are performing two lunchtime concerts on their own, at 1.10 p.m. on Thursday 20th August in Lincoln Cathedral and at 12.15 p.m. in Southwell Minster on Friday 21st August.

On Saturday August 22nd at 8.00 p.m. both choirs will join forces to perform in St. Barnabas Cathedral, Derby Road, Nottingham. We hope you will be able to come to support this event.

Concert at Patchings Arts Centre

Lastly, on Sunday, 19th July The Sinfonia Chorale are performing as part of a weekend of musical activities held at Patchings Arts centre. Further details of this and other events should be available on their website.

Welcome to the second newsletter of Sinfonia Chorale’s 2014/15 season

The choir had a busy run-up to Christmas starting off with a Flashmob performance of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah in the Tesco's Chilwell store, with the full performance of the oratorio at Christchurch, Chilwell on November 29th. This was followed by three Christmas concerts at Patchings Arts Centre, West Bridgford Methodist Church and an informal concert at Cobden Chambers in central Nottingham.

2015 started with a highly successful “Come and Sing/Play“ event in January. This was extremely well supported, with well over 100 participants. Once again we were delighted to welcome Nicolette Moonen, the Baroque string specialist, to coach the instrumentalists and Richard Roddis directed the singers. An enjoyable day was had by all.

During the day we studied the works that feature in our next concert which will take place at Beeston Parish Church on Saturday, March 7th at 7.30pm. This is a very exciting programme entitled “Royal Baroque”. Most of the music being performed was composed by musicians serving in the French Court of Louis XIV at Versailles.

The works are:-

• Lully : Exaudit te Dominus 
• Charpentier : Te Deum 
• Charpentier : Salve Regina (a trois choers) 
• De Lalande : Confitabor Tibi Domine 

The concert also includes Zadok the Priest, the most famous of the Coronation Anthems by Handel.

Richard Roddis will be directing the choir and Nicolette Moonen will be leading the Baroque Ensemble.

This will be a wonderful opportunity to hear this rarely performed French music in the lovely setting of Beeston Parish Church.

Welcome to the new season 2014-2015

Sinfonia Chorale begin their season with a new website, a presence on YouTube,  and a performance of Messiah.

This great work has become a favourite during the run-up to Christmas, with its deep spiritual message and its splendid tunes.

The performance will be small-scale, intimate and direct, with crisp lively choral singing, accompanied by trumpet and organ.

The Spring Concert is another feast of Baroque music with authentic period instruments, led by international violinist, Nicolette Moonen.

The French style of grand motet – calling for soloists and massed forces of voices and instruments – is amply represented with works by the King’s Musician, Jean Baptiste Lully, the man who followed him, Michel-Richard de Lalande, and his contemporary, Marc-Antoine Charpentier. The event focuses on the French Baroque – the opulence of the Royal Court of the Sun King, Louis XIV, at the palace of Versailles.

Charpentier is the best known to us now, especially through the Te Deum – though not always in the concert hall! The Salve Regina is a fine work for three separate choirs, based on Gregorian Chant, with some strikingly dissonant and chromatic writing. Lalande is unjustly neglected, so this is a rare opportunity to hear his magnificent Confitebor tibi Domine. For soloists, 5-part choir and instruments, it is a psalm of praise with plenty of thrilling and vigorous part-writing. As a foil to these, Handel’s great Coronation Anthem, Zadok the Priest, is a worthwhile curtain-raiser – not French, but certainly royal!

In addition, there is the excellent opportunity to sample and study these works with Richard and Nicolette in the annual, Come and Sing and Play in January. For full details, please visit the Come and Sing/Play 2015 page at the new Sinfonia Chorale website, where an application form to take part in this event is available for downloading.
